Preschool Lead Teacher Job Description

General Description

The Preschool Lead Teacher is responsible for all aspects of operating a preschool classroom for children ages 2 through pre-Kindergarten. Key areas of responsibility include preparing lesson plans, setting up learning centers, communicating with parents, and overseeing classroom safety.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Arrive 30 minutes prior to class starting. Use this time to prepare for children’s arrival.
  2. Stay 30 minutes after class to clean up.
  3. Attend all staff meetings and monthly curriculum planning meetings to maintain consistency in teaching themes throughout the building.
  4. Work with age level teams to develop year end portfolios for each child.
  5. Work as a classroom team to design monthly bulletin boards.
  6. Attend 6 hours of professional training per year including fire safety.
  7. Keep first aid/CPR training current.
  8. Familiarize yourself with teacher and parent handbooks.
  9. Complete weekly lesson planning. Plans must include manipulatives needed for the week and revolve around the monthly school theme.
  10. Supply lesson plans for substitute teacher in case of absence.
  11. Regularly meet with other teachers.
  12. Prepare learning center activities. Centers should include one or more of the following skills: sorting, matching, sequencing, sensory exploration, fine motor orientation, gross motor orientation, numeric, or alphabetic.
  13. Function as the primary communicator between parents/guardians and school.
  14. Greet parents/guardians at the door when children are arriving and dismissing.
  15. Notify parents/guardians of daily activities as well as writing monthly newsletter, snack calendars, and written evaluations.
  16. Verbally make phone call connection with families within first two weeks of school.
  17. Prepare student evaluations and conduct mid-year conferences with parents/guardians.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

This position requires a minimum of one of the following: 1 – A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field.  2 – A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, including 30 credit hours in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human service field and 1 year of experience with children. 3 – An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field and 2 years of experience with children. 4 – An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university, including 30 credit hours in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field and 3 years of experience with children.
