Preschool Assistant Teacher Job Description

General Description

The Preschool Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting the Lead Teacher in the daily classroom activities for children ages 2 through pre-Kindergarten. Key areas of responsibility include assisting in lesson planning, setting up learning centers, and overseeing classroom safety.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Arrive 30 minutes prior to class starting. Use this time to prepare for children’s arrival. Stay 30 minutes after class to clean up.
  2. Attend monthly staff meetings as well as CPR and first aid trainings.
  3. Familiarize yourself with teacher and parent handbooks.
  4. Assume Lead Teacher duties when they are out of the classroom.
  5. Assist in the preparation of learning center activities. Centers should include one or more of the following skills: sorting, matching, sequencing, sensory exploration, fine motor orientation, numeric, or alphabetic.
  6. Facilitate children’s opening and closing activities as the Lead Teacher greets children and parents/guardians at the door.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

This position requires a minimum of one of the following: 1 – A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field. 2 – A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate, including 600 or more hours of secondary training described in 3270.31 PA Child Care Requirements. 3 – A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate, 15 credit hours from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field and 1 year of experience with children. 4 – A high school diploma or a general education development certificate and completion of a post-secondary training curriculum described in 3270.31 PA Child Care Requirements. 5 – A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and 2 years experience with children.
