Sound Operator Ministry Description

Purpose

Serving as Sound Operator helps to ensure the church accomplishes its mission through the production of creative and inspiring weekend services and special events.

General Description

The Sound Operator serves as part of the Tech Team during weekend services in support of the Arts organization. Scheduled on a rotating basis, the Sound Operator configures, operates, and troubleshoots all audio equipment used in the execution of weekend services and special events. This includes audio equipment connection, sound board setup/configuration, sound checks and other testing, and sound board operation during rehearsal(s) and production of all weekend services and special events.

Time Commitment

The Tech Team serves during weekend services as well as during special events as needed. Sound Operators are asked to serve all scheduled services, at least one weekend per month. Sound Operators are also recruited as needed to staff a Tech Team for special events. In addition to serving as part of weekend services, Sound Operators will be asked to attend periodic team meetings and training sessions.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Arrive at the scheduled time and begin review of cue sheets and other information related to the service or special event.
  2. Evaluate the status of the sound board and reconfigure as needed.
  3. Check, replace batteries in, and distribute wireless microphones and other equipment as needed to equip band members, speakers, etc.
  4. Coordinate and direct sound checks with band members and others involved in the production to ensure equipment is functioning properly and that proper sound levels and sound mix is obtained.
  5. Attend walk through meeting along with other production team members to review the service order and other important service production details.
  6. Conduct rehearsal to fully understand service details and to practice transitions and audio cues as needed to minimize distractions during the service(s).
  7. Coordinate with other Tech Team members to produce the service/special event as planned.
  8. Attend band practice the week before the weekend you are scheduled to serve.
  9. Attend regular Tech Team meetings and training sessions.

Training, Resources, and Other Requirements

Attending periodic conferences and/or seminars/training sessions is regularly required to ensure the best tools and techniques are being utilized by the church in the production of weekend services. At a minimum, the Sound Operator should attend the Welcome to YOUR CHURCH class.

Reporting Relationship

The Sound Operator reports to the Worship Arts Pastor.

Worship Arts Pastor Job Description

General Description

The Worship Arts Pastor is responsible for creative use of the arts in support of weekly worship services and all other church ministry activities. This includes planning, design, and production of weekly adult worship services; overall support of all other ministry areas in the use of the arts; and continuous improvement of arts capabilities in the church.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Lead a team of paid staff and volunteers in the development of infrastructure to support use of the arts in all areas of the church.
  2. Function as a specialist in the areas of music and creative arts, supporting all areas of ministry within the church.
  3. Plan, design, and produce weekly adult worship services.
  4. Function as primary worship leader for weekly adult worship services.
  5. Recruit, train, equip, and direct musicians, vocalists, technical/creative artists in the production of weekly worship services and periodic special events.
  6. Provide arts support as needed in the production of all special events and other church activities.
  7. Lead the creative use and proactive upkeep of adult worship facilities.
  8. Function as a member of the pastoral staff performing baptism services, weddings, funerals, etc. as part of a rotation schedule.
  9. Assist in the development of an annual budget for arts ministries and manage spending to budget.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

This position requires a minimum of 5 to 7 years experience as a staff member in a ministry leadership capacity. Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Church Music, Biblical Studies or related field is required. (Extensive ministry experience, in some cases, can be substituted.) The successful individual will be a strong leader with a solid work ethic, possess the passion and gifts required to develop and improve creative use of the arts, and have the ability to administrate as a department head.
